{"id":9691,"date":"2024-03-21T08:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-03-21T08:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/airspaceworld.com\/?post_type=news&#038;p=9691"},"modified":"2025-02-13T14:20:03","modified_gmt":"2025-02-13T14:20:03","slug":"sita-delivers-critical-datalink-capability-to-avinor-norways-air-navigation-service","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/airspaceworld.com\/blog\/news\/sita-delivers-critical-datalink-capability-to-avinor-norways-air-navigation-service\/","title":{"rendered":"SITA delivers critical datalink capability to Avinor, Norway\u2019s air navigation service"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/airspaceworld.com\/app\/uploads\/2024\/03\/plane-flying-in-blue-sky-900x600-1.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9693\" srcset=\"https:\/\/airspaceworld.com\/app\/uploads\/2024\/03\/plane-flying-in-blue-sky-900x600-1.webp 720w, https:\/\/airspaceworld.com\/app\/uploads\/2024\/03\/plane-flying-in-blue-sky-900x600-1-300x200.webp 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The project links SITA\u2019s ATN\/VDLm2 service supporting CPDLC to cover the complete communication chain from central Air Traffic Management to the aircraft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wholly owned by the Norwegian Government, Avinor is responsible for 43 airports and air traffic control across Norway, part of the North Sea and the Arctic Ocean, providing safe and efficient travel for around 50 million passengers annually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>SITA\u2019s Aeronautical Telecommunications Network (ATN) and VHF Data Link Mode 2 (VDLm2) services are playing a key role in Avinor\u2019s strategic initiative to optimize Norwegian airspace to reduce costs, fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions by optimizing trajectories in the upper airspace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>SITA will also boost its VHF Digital Link Mode 2 (VDLm2) infrastructure in southern Norway by adding four VHF stations to ensure efficient airspace coverage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Work on the five-year project began in 2023, with a service kick-off scheduled for early 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Key benefits of the new service<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Avinor\u2019s adoption of SITA\u2019s technology will enable it to automate procedures through CPDLC (ATN-B1) \u2013 the main airspace capacity booster in Europe today and essential while air traffic keeps growing across the continent. CPDLC is increasingly the primary means of communication between controllers and pilots, with voice used on an ancillary basis or in contingency situations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ATN\/CPDLC service plays a crucial role in modernizing air traffic management by:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Driving sustainability \u2013 CPDLC is a prerequisite to implement new ATC concepts such as Trajectory Based Operations. This creates an efficient and detailed, four-dimensional trajectory that is coordinated with ground actors. Air traffic controllers then attempt to facilitate that plan where possible.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reducing voice congestion \u2013 it offloads routine tasks from voice channels, allowing for quicker communication and improved handling of airspace,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Improving situational awareness \u2013 it enables the exchange of data such as ATC clearances, instructions, and position reports in digital format, enhancing clarity and reducing misunderstandings,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Increasing flight efficiency \u2013 it facilitates more precise clearances and instructions, optimizing flight paths and reducing fuel consumption,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reducing communication errors \u2013 it uses standardized messaging, minimizing the risk of misinterpretation and improving safety,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Enhancing data security \u2013 ATN provides robust data encryption, safeguarding sensitive communication between pilots and air traffic controllers,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reducing workload for controllers \u2013 CPDLC automates routine tasks, freeing up controllers to focus on complex situations,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Improving controller-pilot coordination \u2013 CPDLC facilitates two-way communication, enhancing collaboration and situational awareness for both parties,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sustainability \u2013 CPDLC is a prerequisite to implement new ATC concepts that optimize trajectories and limit emissions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Strategic steps<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Commenting on the adoption of SITA\u2019s ATN\/CPDLC technology,&nbsp;<strong>Ellen Lystad, Director ANS Technology Development at Avinor<\/strong>, said: \u201cAs part of our commitment to the Single European Sky programme (SESAR), are&nbsp; replacing the core system for en-route services, approach control services and tower services. We are also contributing to efficiency improvements in the European network through an increased scope of data sharing. Data sharing between the ground and air and systems on the ground will lay the foundation of this digitalization \u2013 and SITA is making a decisive contribution to that process through its ATN and CPDLC services\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Yann Cabaret, CEO of SITA FOR AIRCRAFT<\/strong>, welcomed Avinor&#8217;s decision to contract SITA to provide the complete air traffic management chain across Norwegian airspace. \u201cWith the important inclusion of Norway, SITA can now provide complete airspace coverage across the European Union and adjacent countries \u2013 all part of the Single European Sky initiative. SITA operates a European-wide ATN backbone, the primary means of connection to the ANSPs.
